Farleton Fell from Holme.
Start. Holme, (Burton Road)
Route. Holme - Lancaster/Kendal canal - Farleton - Farleton Fell - Newbiggin Crags - Clawthorpe Lane - Burton-in-Kendal - Lancaster/Kendal canal - Holme.
Notes. Farleton Fell rising abruptly beside the M6, guardian of Junction 36 gateway to the many splendours of Southern Lakeland. This walk crosses the summit drinking in the delights of this limestone plateau, super scenery, naked limestone scars littered with glacial erratic's, wonderful views and to start and finish the day a lovely section of canal side rambling.
Because canals aren't my forte I split that section by parking in Burton Road, from there I joined the canal. North I headed, my high ground for the day Farleton Fell always visible rising to the east. Via canal tow-paths and sheep pastures I made my way to Farleton village, on a sharp bend next to a farm house a finger-post invited me to enjoy the delights of Farleton Fell. I ascended, first through sheep pastures then a gorse thicket, my route crossed rivers of limestone scree before reaching the summit.
South I wandered, a green trod under foot and a dry stone wall for company, the path guided me over the many clints and grikes of Newbiggin Crags before field paths deposited me on a narrow fell road. With tarmac under food I descended, half a mile of easy walking followed before a finger-post invited me to Burton Fell, I followed this path through more sheep pastures to access woodland. Muddy paths now ushered me through coppice woodland to the start of a narrow lane, this in turn guided me between hedgerows into Burton-in-Kendal, (to give it it's Sunday name). Via Vicarage Lane, Tanpits Lane and Station Lane I made my way back to the canal. All that remained was just over a mile of easy walking through stunning views with a prolific amount of wildlife for company.
